NTPC commissions third 800MW coal-fired unit at Kudgi

The producer's installed capacity is now at 52GW.

India's largest thermal power producer NTPC has commissioned the third and last 800 MW unit of its Kudgi supercritical coal-fired power plant at Bijapur in Karnataka (India). The construction of the Phase 1 of the Kudgi project started in 2013 and includes three 800 MW units with a total capacity of 2,400 MW.

The first unit started commercial operations in July 2017 and the second one in January 2018. A second phase of 1,600 MW is under consideration but the project has not been started yet. Most of the power generated at Kudgi will be consumed in Karnataka, while Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala will also benefit from the project.

With the commissioning of this new unit, NTPC's installed capacity now stands at 52,191 MW.
