METI's Surya Darma seeks to accelerate renewable energy in Indonesia

He will shed light on METI’s target and plans for the energy sector.

Surya Darma is the chairman of Masyarakat Energi Terbarukan Indonesia (METI), or the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society. He is also the President Director of PT. Hasera Sagoesa and the President Commissioner of PT Patriot Nusantara Aceh. He is currently a principal adviser of Green Energy Geothermal (GEG). He was previously the Chairman of the Energy Commission of the National Research Council (DRN) of Indonesia, established by the Minister of Research and Technology of Indonesia. He got his first degree from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), in 1984. He earned a Diploma in Geothermal Energy & Technology from Auckland University, in 1990, and obtained a Ph.D. degree from Kennedy Western University, in 2000.

Asian Power reached out to METI to explain the chairman’s vision as a forerunner for renewable energy development in Indonesia. 

Can you share with us Dr. Darma's previous work experience and responsibilities?

Dr. Surya Darma has over 35 years experience in the geothermal, power and energy sector and has been active in renewable energy development in Indonesia for many years. From 2006 to 2009, he served as the Director of Operations at Pertamina Geothermal Energy (a subsidiary company of PT Pertamina) and was then appointed as an adviser for the President Director of Pertamina until mid-2011. He was President of Indonesia Geothermal Association (INAGA), from 2007 to 2011, and has been a member of the Expert Board of Indonesia Electric Power Society (MKI) since 2008.

Dr. Surya Darma has been with the Advisory Board of INAGA since 2011. He was also active as a Board Member of Indonesian Chambers of Commerce and Industry from 2008 to 2014. Since 2007, he has taken a role in the Board of Directors of the International Geothermal Association (IGA), where he is serving his third term.

What are Dr. Darma’s key business philosophies and goals?

His goal is to increase renewable energy development in Indonesia for the benefit of the world. As Chairman of the Indonesia Renewable Energy Society (METI-IRES), Surya Darma is one of the key people in the energy sector and a notable speaker for national and international seminars and workshops in Indonesia and other parts of the world.

Can you give our avid readers a glimpse of what he will share at the Asian Power Utility Forum?

He will raise awareness on the energy and utilities condition in Indonesia, the recent status of renewable energy resources, the current condition of the energy utilities and their problem, the renewable energy target in the energy mix and the role of METI in accelerating renewable energy development.
