Funding released for Pakistan's 100MW Thar power project
PM Yusuf Raza Gilani directed the release of funds for the Thar Power Project after Dr Samar Mubarakmand briefed him on the Underground Coal Gasification of Thar Coal.
The project will generate 100MW of electricity by the end of 2013 at a total cost of Rs9.9 billion.
Dr Samar informed the premier that in December 2011, a very significant breakthrough occurred in the UCG project when coal gas was successfully produced by the ignition of coal 600 feet below ground.
To complete the power generation phase of the project, Dr Samar requested the premier to arrange immediate funding of Rs2.4 billion this year and remaining Rs7.8 billion during the next financial year so that the country could benefit from the generation of 100MW of electricity before the end of 2013.
Prime Minister Gilani directed the ministers of finance, petroleum and natural resources to have a meeting at the earliest and arrange financial resources required for the project without further delay.
