Queensland buys 1,100-km power line project

The project construction will begin in 2024.

The government of the state of Queensland said will acquire the 1,100-kilometre CopperString 2.0 power transmission line project, with the construction expected to be completed by 2029.

In a statement, the government said it has made a (A$500m) down payment from its coal royalties fund for the (A$5b) project that will connect the largest renewable exergy zone in the country and the North West Mineral Province.

“CopperString is the most significant investment in economic infrastructure in North Queensland in generations. Unlocking affordable renewable energy and our critical minerals will benefit Townsville, Mount Isa and every town in between – unlocking thousands of jobs and billions in investment,” said Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said the transmission line will unlock 6,00 megawatts of potential renewable energy for the North Queensland Renewable Energy Zone.

The government added that the project which will connect renewable wind and solar resources with critical minerals mining and processing will also unlock over (A$500b) in new critical minerals in North Queensland.

The construction of the project will start next year, whilst early works will start this year. It is expected to create 800 direct jobs during the six years of building and 50 more for ongoing operations and maintenance jobs.
