India PM dedicates NTPC thermal plants to nation

The projects have a total investment of around $3.5b (INR28,978 crore).

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi allocated the NTPC Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station and NSPCL Rourkela PP-II Expansion Projects to the country and laid the foundation for the NTPC Talcher Thermal Power Project, Stage-III.

In a statement, NTPC said the Darlipali power station, which has a capacity of 800 megawatts each for two units, cost around $1.78b (INR14,822 crore). It uses a supercritical technology, supplying power to the states of Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Sikkim.

The 250 MW Rourkela PP-II expansion project was established in Rourkela Steel Plant which will supply electricity to the steel plant. Its construction costs about $278m (INR2,312 crore).

Meanwhile, the developing Talcher Thermal Project, Stage III located within the old Talcher project which was decommissioned after completing over 50 years of operations, will use a highly efficient supercritical technology. It has an investment of $1.4m (INR11,844 crore).

Once completed, 50% of its capacity will be dedicated to Odisha, whilst other states such as Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Assam will get power from low-cost power from the pit-head station.

NTPC added that the project will include modern environmental features such as an efficient electrostatic precipitator, flue gas desulphurisation, biomass co-firing, and covered storage space for coal.
