Siemens to supply power island for Korea power plant

It'll have 902 MW electrical capacity.

Siemens will deliver the power island for Dangjin 4 combined cycle power plant in South Korea, whose customer is the South Korean construction company GS Engineering & Construction Corporation (GS E&C), who will erect the overall plant for the end customer GS EPS, and the end customer is the Seoul-based power utility GS Electric Power and Services Co., Ltd. (GS EPS). According to a release from Siemens, equipped with the latest state-of-the art Siemens H-class gas turbine, Dangjin 4 will attain an efficiency level above 60 percent and can supply ecofriendly electricity to more than 900,000 people.

The natural gas-fired 902-megawatts power plant is scheduled to come on line in the summer of 2017. Order volume for Siemens including a long-term service contract is EUR360 million.

Following the CCPPs Dangjin units 1, 2 and 3 this is the fourth unit at Dangjin site (formerly known as Bugok) equipped with Siemens technology and the second one at the site to feature the latest H-class technology from Siemens.

Here's more from Siemens:

This site is located in Dangjin-City, Chungchong Nam-do Province, approximately 120 kilometers south of Seoul. Like for Dangjin 3, Siemens will deliver for Dangjin 4 the power island consisting of two gas turbines model SGT6-8000H, one SST6-5000 steam turbine with its condenser, three SGen6-2000H generators, two heat recovery steam generators, along with the overall electrical equipment and the SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control system.

The components will be arranged in a multi-shaft configuration. A long-term service and maintenance contract was also concluded for the gas turbines.

South Korea is experiencing a rapid rise in demand for electrical energy, which is why it is planning to expand its generation capacity from 95 gigawatts (GW) today to more than 150 GW by 2030. Gas-fired power plants are expected to account for approximately one-third of this amount.

“Since South Korea imports nearly its entire demand for gas in the form of liquid natural gas the efficiency of gas-fired power plants plays a crucial role for the country. This is why many utilities opt for an H-class-technology solution by Siemens,” said Rochus Bergmann, President & CEO of Siemens Energy Solutions Ltd.

“Based on the excellent performance of the previously built projects at Dangjin site, the trustful relationship and the proven state-of-the-art technology we again opted for a Siemens solutions. We are looking forward to a smooth completion of the project,” said Lee Wan-Kyoung, President & CEO of GS EPS.

Including the Dangjin 4 project, Siemens has now sold 14 H-class gas turbines for six different projects in South Korea. Two of these projects, Danjing 3 and Andong, have already taken up successfully commercial operation with efficiency levels of more than 60 percent.

Currently under construction are the Ansan, Incheon, Daegu, and Jangmoon CCPPs in South Korea. In total Siemens sold 38 gas turbines of the SGT-8000H series, ten of which are in commercial operation and clocked up more than 90,000 equivalent operating hours (EOH).
