Engie, The Abraaj Group eyes building 1GW of wind projects

The projects will be across several Indian states.

The French state-held company Engie and the Dubai-based investor The Abraaj Group have announced a partnership regarding the construction of a 1GW wind park platform in India. According to Enerdata, the project will be built across several Indian states but no other details have been provided so far.

This move fits into the current governmental strategy, which intends to accelerate the growth of the domestic wind power generating capacity. The Indian renewable energy sector continues to grow rapidly and is expected to continue at a rate of 9% per year until 2020, underpinned by an increasing domestic demand. Enerdata added that the Indian government is targeting 175GW of renewable energies by 2022, including 100GW of solar power, 10GW from biomass and 60GW of wind power capacity, which will require to double of the current wind installed capacity of 32GW over the next five years.

"Engie already has a solid foothold in India. In 2016, the company generated 1.2 TWh and reported 170MW in operation and 290MW under construction in the country. At the beginning of 2017, the company won a contract for the construction of two 70MW solar power plants in the State of Rajasthan via its subsidiary company Solairedirect," Enerdata said.
