TNB secures operations and management contract for Pakistani project

TNB Remaco secured an operations and maintenance contract for Laraib Energy Ltd's 84 megawatt New Bong Escape Hydroelectric Power Complex.

Under the US$14.08 million contract, TNB Remaco,  will provide services for five years, with an option to extend it for another seven years. The hydropower complex was built at a cost of US$235 million on the Jhelum River in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

This is the second contract secured by TNB Remaco, the first being the operation and maintenance agreement for the 213.6 megawatt diesel and co generation power plant in Punjab, Pakistan.

According to Laraib Energy Ltd Chairman Vince Harris, thier company seeks to avail more of TNB's world class standard of operations in future project. Pakistan-based Laraib is a unit of The Hub Power Company Ltd.

TNB and its unit, TNB Repair and Maintenance Sdn Bhd or TNB Remaco, are recognised globally for their knowledge and technology, as well as, high standards of work, which is important for Pakistan's power industry, he said.

"For strategic relations, we would expect to favour TNB for this sort of projects," Harris told reporters after sealing a second operation and maintenance contract with TNB Remaco here today.

Harris pointed out that there is ample opportunities in Pakistan's power sector.

"Now, only half of the population are not connected. The peak demand is about 70,000 mw and the current system cannot support," he said, adding that there was a daily power shoratage of 30 per cent in Pakistan.

Harris also said that it was normal to be without electricity for between three and four hours daily in Karachi.
