India's rooftop solar to grow to 15-16 GW in 2020
The government will introduce new programmes to incentivise usage of rooftop solar.
The rooftop solar capacity in India is likely to reach 15-16 GW by the end of 2022, which is only a third of the 40 GW target set by the government, according to a report by JMK Research.
In 2019, India added about 2.1 GW of new rooftop solar capacity, and JMK estimates that another 2.5-3 GW of new rooftop solar capacity is likely to be added in 2020 on the back of the Indian’s government increased efforts in adopting rooftop solar technology.
JMK noted that the government has introduced new national programmes, such as Rooftop Phase II, under which DISCOMs are incentivised to promote rooftop solar.
India is also expected to adopt battery storage technologies from 2021 onwards. Tariffs for C&I consumers adopting rooftop solar and battery storage will be commercially viable in most states within the period, noted JMK.
