Cypark Resources Berhad clinches Solar Power Project of the Year - Malaysia at Asian Power Awards

Its floating solar plant transforms into a green energy zone integrated with an aquaculture area.

Green energy solutions provider Cypark Resources Berhad won the Solar Power Project of the Year - Malaysia category at the Asian Power Awards for the development of its 98MWp Floating Solar project in Kelantan.

The floating solar plant consists of 247,830 solar panels, capable of generating about 140,000 MWh of power per year, powering up to 46,480 households whilst saving about 96,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. This power plant was built under the Large Scale Solar 2, a competitive bidding programme to drive down the Levelised Cost of Energy for the development of large-scale solar photovoltaic plants.

Meanwhile, Cypark has also taken the additional step to ensure the well-being of the marine ecosystem in Tasik Danau Tok Uban by conducting daily in-situ monitoring and monthly water quality assessments. This rigorous monitoring approach aims to maintain and improve the water conditions in the lake, providing an ideal environment for the thriving marine ecosystem.

Since the introduction of the floating solar project, the fish population has surged to around 157 metric tonnes in 2022.

“The floating solar project has not only transformed the lake into a green energy zone integrated with an aquaculture area but also serves as tangible evidence that such projects contribute to the betterment of the environment and the local economy,” the company said.

Cypark added that the strategic placement of floating solar panels above water bodies created a shading effect on the surface, offering valuable benefits for specific aquaculture practices. Certain fish species thrive in shaded areas, and these solar panels play a vital role in regulating the water temperature, minimising evaporation, and providing shelter to the fish.

“This symbiotic relationship between the floating solar installations and aquaculture not only promotes the wellbeing of aquatic life but also enhances the overall system efficiency and contributes to environmental conservation,” it said.

With this experience, Cypark would continue to expand into floating solar projects in Malaysia to support the government’s NETR as well as in South East Asia.

The Asian Power Awards, now in its 19th year, celebrates and honours companies and projects that have taken innovative and game-changing steps to address the effects of the climate crisis and meet the growing demand for energy.
