Abu Dhabi Sustainable Water Solutions clinches two wins at Asian Water Awards

The project meets the long-term needs of the people for the collection and recycling of wastewater.

Abu Dhabi Sustainable Water Solutions (SWS) brought home wins in two categories at the Asian Water Awards for its transformational deep pumping station for water recycling.

The AED5.9b Al Wathba Deep Pumping Station and associated Deep Tunnel & link sewers is SWS’s sustainable and expandable response to meet the long-term needs of Abu Dhabi Emirate for the collection and recycling of wastewater.

It includes eight 5m3/s pumps and total ultimate capacity of 1.9 million m3/day, dual wet wells with 3.6m x 1.5m hydraulically operated tunnel isolation penstocks, and pumps powered with 6.3 kV motors of 5800 kW output, amongst others.

“The Deep Pumping Station is at the heart of SWS’s plans towards net zero. With a transformational capacity to reuse high-quality recycled water, SWS has positioned itself to be at the forefront of the circular economy and to meet the challenges posed by climate change,” the company said.

This has also strengthened Abu Dhabi’s wastewater recycling infrastructure far beyond efficiency and reliability. With over 600,000 m3 of recycled water reused daily including the supply of recycled water to Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, SWS has reshaped the urban water management cycle.

Traditional water management systems previously relied on multiple smaller pumping stations, leading to inefficiencies in energy consumption, maintenance, and management. The concept of gravity flows throughout the local collection system has enabled the abandonment of over 53 existing pumping stations to date which reduces energy consumption in operations.

SWS won the Water Company Excellence Award - UAE and the Water Sanitation Initiative of the Year - UAE categories during the prestigious awards programme. The Asian Water Awards celebrates groundbreaking innovations in water management throughout Asia.
